ok guys i'm not sure what is going on

i have index.html in the root of my website and i'm trying to rewrite to a directory where index_new.html resides

Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine On

RewriteBase /joompatrick

RewriteRule ^index.html$ /pages/index_new.html

this is what i have in my .htaccess file. any thoughts? i still have to go and type http://mysite.com/pages to get to the new index.
